Rural Schools

Country or rural schools were an important part of rural life in pioneer days. Marshall County at one time had 125 rural school districts. It is easy to see why the county superintendent of schools had a prominent office in the historic courthouse.

We have recreated a country school room complete with student desks, a recitation bench, lunch pails, piano, books, Cram's maps, a globe, and of course a teacher with a very important looking desk. And we have a large school bell you can ring! What fun is that! It's such a delight listening to the vibrant sound echo throughout the Museum.

An added delight to visitors of the city parks in Waterville and Marysville are original school houses that are maintained for visitors to recreate one-room school days!
